I created a collection of icons and graphic motifs designed to give depth and identity to the virtual world of Space Jam: A New Legacy. Territory Studio integrated the visual language I developed into the rich, animated VFX sequences seen throughout the film.
I began by sketching ideas on paper before quickly iterating them on screen. These digital studies explored form, abstraction, visual weight and negative space. At this stage, the aim was to work freely without becoming too attached to any single idea or style of execution.
A productive session would generate several distinct families of icons, each approaching the brief from a different angle. Once I found a promising direction, I refined the strongest concepts and developed them for presentation.
Seeing the icons appear so prominently in the finished film was particularly rewarding. Many featured front and centre, rather than simply serving as background detail.
