Early UI ideation for Activision’s Modern Warfare 3, exploring new ways to define the look and feel of the franchise’s front end. Activision were reviewing fresh creative approaches, and the Freestyle Games team was pitching to be part of the mix.
I aimed to give the menus a stronger sense of identity. Too often, shooters feel like functional gateways rather than part of the experience. I wanted something that carried the game's tone but also provided a visual contrast to its intensity.
Some directions referenced the FUI and military graphics woven through the campaign and promotional materials. Another explored the feel of live news feeds reporting on global conflict, connecting the fiction to the real world. My favourite placed the interface within a world of ultra-slow-motion bullets and explosions, with menus drifting through suspended fragments of chaos. The atmosphere was cinematic, tense and stylised, drawing inspiration from The Matrix's bullet-time aesthetic.
