For those not old enough to remember, Jetpac was a classic arcade game created for the ZX Spectrum, one of the first genuinely affordable home computers in the UK. It was developed by software pioneers Ultimate Play the Game, whose founders would later establish Rare, and became one of the defining titles of the 8-bit era.
Jetpac Refuelled was a modern reimagining of the original, created for the newly established Xbox Live Arcade service. As a download-only title, there was no traditional packaging or printed manual, so I was briefed to produce a simple PDF guide.
I went beyond the original brief and created a small interactive microsite that reflected the game’s visual identity and playful tone. It combined the manual with animation and sound, encouraging fans to explore the game and offering far more engagement than a static PDF download.
I always enjoyed putting in the extra effort at Rare, particularly because that attention to detail was recognised and appreciated by its loyal fan base.
