Rock never dies.
As Lead UI at the studio, I helped breathe new life into the classic Guitar Hero franchise during the early development phase of GH Live. We were working on it just before the launch of the PS4, at the start of the move away from physical media.
The focus was on two core modes: a single-player festival experience and an online mode inspired by music TV, iTunes, and YouTube, where players could engage with an evolving library of content tailored to their preferences. My art direction, branding, and graphic design aimed to connect with a new generation of players while keeping the essence of what made Guitar Hero so iconic.
To be honest, I was never entirely sold on the DVD-style background videos in the single-player mode. They were meant to make players feel like real rock stars, but to me it felt a bit self-indulgent and cheesy, like something out of an early 90s CD-ROM game.
Rock never dies, although in this case, judging by the sales, sometimes it does. Still, I enjoyed contributing to the early phase of the project. And when you’re not feeling the direction a project is taking, sometimes the best move is to step back and give others a chance to run with it.
